Looking to fill these sunny days without emptying your wallet? From outdoor story times to echo bridges and splash pads, there are so many fun (and free!) ways to explore the area with your kids this summer. Here are some of our favorite local adventures that promise fresh air and smiley faces.
1. Hop playgrounds & splash pads
Try Burr Park in Newton, Greene’s Field in Needham, or Warren Park in Wellesley. Many have splash pads or sprinklers. Pack towels & extra clothes for guaranteed giggles. Don’t forget to check out our list of splash pads for a full list of fun places close by!
2. Bike, scooter or stroll the Bay Colony Rail Trail
Start in Needham and see how far your crew can go. It’s flat, shady, and has benches for snack breaks. Bring scooters or balance bikes for younger kiddos.
3. Outdoor story times at local libraries
Check the schedules at our local Libraries. Many offer weekly outdoor story times under big shady trees. A perfect laid-back morning outing.

8. Explore Echo Bridge & Hemlock Gorge
Kids will get a kick out of shouting into the gorge to hear the echo. Walk across the old bridge, then scramble down by the river to watch the water rush by.
9. Visit a local farmers’ market
Check out our Local Farmers Market Guide to find weekly markets filled with live music, kids’ crafts, and tasty samples. It’s an easy, low-pressure outing that usually ends with a delicious treat (and some happy kids!).
10. Make it a summer scavenger hunt
Pick any local park or trail, like Noanet Woodlands in Dover, and challenge the kids to find pinecones, cool rocks, funky bugs, or squirrels. Whoever finds the most picks tomorrow’s outing.
Pro tip: Always keep a “summer kit” in the car: water bottles, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks & maybe even a change of clothes. That way, no matter how wild or messy the adventure gets, you’re ready for it all.
