Crisp mornings, cozy sweaters, kids racing through the orchard, and that first bite of a warm cider doughnut…fall in New England is here! And nothing says fall family tradition quite like apple picking. Of course, we moms know the truth, it’s not all picture perfect. Someone will drop their apples and you’ll probably have to bribe at least one kid with an extra doughnut to keep it going. But at the end of the day, you’ll head home with a bag full of apples, sticky fingers, tired kids, and maybe even that one photo of everyone in flannel that makes it all worth it.
Here are 5 of our favorite apple picking spots within an easy drive of Needham Wellesley and Newton. Complete with why we love them and what not to miss:
Belkin Family Lookout Farm (Natick)
- Why we love it: One of the oldest working farms in the country, Beyond apple picking, kids will love the play area, bounce pad, and barnyard animals, while parents can enjoy the onsite taproom with cider and beer. On weekends, there’s often live music and plenty of seasonal treats.
- Don’t miss: Their farm market and scenic orchard views, plus, it’s one of the closest options for a quick apple-picking outing.
Honey Pot Hill Orchards (Stow)
- Why we love it: A classic New England fall adventure. Think apple picking, hayrides, barnyard animals, hedge mazes, and the kind of cider doughnuts you’ll be talking about until next year. It’s big, busy, and so much fun for kids of all ages.
- Don’t miss: The giant hedge maze. It’s a tradition for many families and guaranteed to wear the kids out.
Shelburne Farm (Stow)
- Why we love it: A little less hectic than Honey Pot, but still packed with fun. With hayrides, a small playground, and even food trucks and craft cider/beer, it’s an easy crowd-pleaser for families with different age groups.
- Don’t miss: Their warm cider doughnuts, made fresh on-site. We’ve heard they’re some of the best in Massachusetts!
Carver Hill Orchard (Stow)
- Why we love it: This family run farm feels quiet and peaceful, a great pick if you’re looking for a slower-paced day with less crowds. The rolling hills make it extra photogenic, and the orchard has a friendly, small-town vibe.
- Don’t miss: Their farm stand. Bring home honey, baked goods, and fresh veggies for a little extra taste of fall.
Tougas Family Farm (Northborough)
- Why we love it: This is a “make a day of it” orchard. Beyond apple picking, there’s pumpkin picking, barnyard animals, and a big play area for kids. The farm stand serves ice cream, fresh baked treats, and cider doughnuts that are worth the drive alone.
- Don’t miss: The wide open play area. It’s perfect for kids to run off their sugar rush while you sit back with a cider slushie.
Mom to Mom Tips:
- Arrive early to beat the crowds, especially on weekends.
- Many farms require reservations or timed entry so make sure to check websites before heading out.
- Don’t leave without cider doughnuts (trust us on this one!).
