Portugal: The Perfect 4 Night Escape

Why traveling to Portugal should be on everyone's European bucket list.

Europe in the summer is always a good idea, but between work, camp schedules, and family life, it’s not always realistic to take two weeks off. We wanted a trip that felt like a true European escape without spending half our vacation getting there. Living on the East Coast, Portugal was the perfect choice. The overnight flight from Boston is just over six hours, so by the next morning we were wandering the colorful streets of Lisbon.

With only four nights to work with, we split our trip between one night in Lisbon and three nights in Comporta, and it ended up being the perfect mix of city and beach. Looking back, the only thing we’d change is adding another night in Lisbon. We landed early and packed in as much as possible, taking a tuk tuk tour, wandering the charming neighborhoods, shopping, enjoying incredible meals, and soaking in the city’s vibrant energy. By the time we left the following afternoon, we were already talking about coming back.

From Lisbon, we headed 90 minutes south to Comporta, where everything slowed down. Think pristine beaches, pine forests, rice fields, incredible food, and a relaxed pace that makes you instantly unwind. Although this was an adults only getaway, we were pleasantly surprised by how family friendly it felt. Families were everywhere; splashing in the pools, riding bikes around the resort and playing at the beach club. We left saying the same thing: next time, we’re bringing the kids.

I’d recommend this itinerary for couples looking for a quick European escape or families with school-aged children who can appreciate both the city and the beach. We visited in July, and while it was warm, the coastal breeze kept Comporta comfortable.

Where to Stay

Lisbon

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon
We stayed here and absolutely loved it. The location made it easy to explore the city, the rooms were beautiful, and the breakfast was one of the best we’ve had. It was the perfect luxury home base for our quick stay.

Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Family Suites (or Martinhal Oriente)
If you’re traveling with kids, the Martinhal properties are known for being some of the best family hotels in Lisbon. Spacious suites, kid friendly amenities, and central locations make them a great choice for families exploring the city.

Comporta

Sublime Comporta
We honestly can’t recommend Sublime enough. While this trip was just the two of us, we were surprised by how many families were there. It strikes the perfect balance of luxury and relaxation, and we’d stay here again in a heartbeat with our kids.

Where to Eat

Lisbon

Rocco
One of our favorite dinners of the trip. The restaurant is stunning, the atmosphere is lively, and my husband said it was the most incredible octopus he has ever had!

Mini Bar by José Avillez
This was on our list and we heard amazing things. On our next trip, we are heading here!

Comporta

Cavalariça Comporta
Our favorite dinner in Comporta. Housed in a beautifully restored stable, the menu focuses on seasonal ingredients and dishes meant to share. Make reservations well in advance.

Mesa
A relaxed yet elevated restaurant serving fresh Mediterranean inspired cuisine. Everything felt simple, fresh, and beautifully prepared.

Beefbar Comporta
If you’re craving an incredible steak after a few days of seafood, this is the place. The cocktails, atmosphere, and food were all fantastic.

Sublime Comporta Beach Club
We loved it so much that we ate lunch here every single day. Fresh seafood, salads, pizzas, and one of the most beautiful beachfront settings made it impossible to leave.

Where to Play

Explore Lisbon by Tuk Tuk

The perfect way to see Lisbon if you’re short on time. We covered so much of the city while learning about its history and getting recommendations from our guide.

Wander Lisbon’s Neighborhoods

Some of our favorite moments were simply getting lost in the streets of Alfama and Chiado, stopping for a glass of wine, shopping, and taking in the incredible viewpoints.

Relax at Sublime Beach Club

Whether you’re swimming, reading a book (I read 3!), or enjoying a long lunch overlooking the ocean, this was easily one of our favorite parts of the trip.

A Few Tips Before You Go

  • Fly overnight from the East Coast to maximize your vacation.
  • If possible, spend two nights in Lisbon before heading to Comporta, you’ll want the extra time.
  • We hired a private transfer from Lisbon to Comporta, which made the 90 minute drive effortless. We thought about renting a car and maybe having it to explore Comporta, but we had an easy time finding taxis.
  • Reserve restaurants well in advance if you’re traveling during the summer.
  • Even if you’re planning a couples’ getaway, keep Comporta on your family travel list. We left convinced it’s a destination our kids would absolutely love.
