Where to Locally Go Skiing, Snowboarding & Tubing

Check out some of our favorite local ski, snowboarding, and tubing locations that are easy trips from NWN.

Winter in Massachusetts can feel long, cold, and a little dreary, but the good news is we’re surrounded by so many easy outdoor snow adventures. You don’t need a weekend getaway or a long drive to enjoy winter sports in New England. There are several local ski hills and tubing parks within an hour of our area that are perfect for quick day trips, first-timers, and families with younger kids. Below are some of the best local and easy winter spots to check out this season!

Skiing:

  • Blue Hills Ski Area: Canton, MA. Best for: First-time skiers, kids, quick trips. The closest ski area to NWN, Blue Hills is perfect for learning and for days when you only have a few hours. It’s small, approachable, and ideal for younger kids or anyone just getting started.
  • Nashoba Valley Ski Area: Westford, MA. Best for: Beginners and families. A longtime favorite for local families, Nashoba offers groomed trails, lessons, rentals, and an easy layout that makes learning to ski less intimidating.
  • Ski Ward: Shrewsbury, MA. Best for: Beginner to intermediate skiers. Ski Ward is another great place to build confidence on the slopes and works well for families and group outings.
  • Wachusett Mountain: Westminster, MA. Best for: All levels and longer runs. f you want more terrain and longer trails without going too far, Wachusett is the go-to ski mountain close to Boston.

Snowboarding

  • Blue Hills Ski Area Best for: Beginner snowboarders. A convenient place to learn snowboarding without committing to a full day or long drive.
  • Nashoba Valley Ski Area, Best for: Beginner & intermediate riders. Nashoba has terrain parks and good snowmaking, making it a popular option for snowboarders close to home.
  • Wachusett Mountain. Best for: Intermediate & advanced riders. Wachusett offers more vertical, better park features, and night riding, ideal for snowboarders looking for variety.

Snow Tubing (No Experience Required!)

  • Nashoba Valley Ski Area. One of the largest tubing parks near Boston, with multiple lanes and conveyor lifts. Tickets are sold in time blocks and often sell out on weekends.
  • Ski Ward. Best for: Easy tubing days. A fun and manageable tubing setup that’s great for younger kids and first-timers.
  • Yawgoo Valley Snow Tubing Park: Exeter, RI. A favorite for tubing-only days, Yawgoo offers dedicated tubing lanes with lifts and a super fun setup for kids and adults alike. It’s an easy add if you’re looking to mix things up beyond the usual local spots.
  • McIntyre Ski Area: Manchester, NH. Best for: Skiing + tubing combo days. A solid New Hampshire option if you want both downhill skiing and tubing in one place.
  • Pats Peak: Henniker, NH. Best for: Full-day tubing & skiing. Known for its family-friendly tubing park and welcoming vibe.

Bonus: Not Downhill, But Super Local

  • Weston Ski Track: Weston, MA. Best for: Cross-country skiing & snowshoeing. A great close to home option for getting outside in the winter without downhill skiing.
